【Abstract】Based on the 2015 CHARLS microdata, this paper empirically analyzes the effect of medical insurance on the absolute and relative medical burden of middle-aged and elderly families under the condition of controlling for sample selection bias. Medical insurance has a alleviation effect on the absolute medical burden of families, but has little effect on the relative medical burden. According to the type of insurance, medical insurance can reduce the absolute medical burden of urban and rural residents' medical insurance families and the relative medical burden of urban workers' medical insurance families, and the conclusions of the robustness test are basically the same. Accordingly, this paper puts forward the policy suggestions of adopting classified management measures to reduce the medical burden of middle-aged and elderly families, narrowing the treatment gap between urban employees' medical insurance and urban and rural residents' medical insurance through financial subsidies, and finally realizing the integration of the two systems.
