This paper argues that the poverty of rural residents is not only related to the effective implementation of targeted poverty alleviation and poverty alleviation in China, but also has an important impact on China's comprehensive construction of a moderately prosperous society and the realization of the "Chinese Dream". However, the worsening income gap will affect the poverty situation of rural residents, and social security expenditure. As an important part of people's livelihood support, social security should play a role in poverty alleviation. Using the data of the China Comprehensive Survey, this paper empirically examines the impact of social security expenditure on rural residents' poverty from the perspective of income gap narrowing, and finds that whether the income gap is measured by the district and county Gini coefficient or quantile expenditure percentage, it proves that the widening of income gap increases the probability of poverty among rural residents. Social security expenditures not only reduce the probability of poverty among rural residents, but also cushion the adverse impact of income disparity on poverty among rural residents. Therefore, while narrowing the income gap, the government should improve the level and efficiency of social security expenditure, and alleviate the poverty situation of rural residents, so as to provide enlightenment for solving the current "poverty trap" in China.
